Each year in the United States, there are nearly 3 million reports of child abuse and neglect — 2,316 of them in Dutchess County. In a recent year, there were 70 allegations of Dutchess County children being choked, twisted or shaken; 614 of children suffering lacerations, bruises or welts, 466 of children starved or inadequately clothed or sheltered; 43 of beatings that caused fractures or internal injuries and 28 of children burned or scalded. Our own agency saw more than 300 children for investigations of intra-familial sexual abuse.

Child abuse survivors are more likely to struggle in school and to cost taxpayers millions in treatment for mental illness, physical and emotional disabilities, and alcohol and substance abuse.
